Linguistic Strategies in Print Media Coverage

This study is anchored in Critical Linguistics (CL) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), particularly drawing on Roger Fowler’s foundational work on language, power, and ideology in media discourse. Fowler et al. (1979) argue that language is not a neutral medium for reporting reality but a socially constructed system that reflects and reinforces power relations. From this perspective, journalistic texts—especially crime reports—are ideological artifacts shaped by institutional constraints, political pressures, and sociocultural hierarchies.

Central to this framework is Fowler’s theory of transitivity, which examines how grammatical choices assign agency, responsibility, and blame (Fowler, 1991). In crime reporting, transitivity patterns determine whether actors are foregrounded as active agents or backgrounded through passive constructions and nominalizations. Such choices are particularly consequential when reporting murders involving prominent personalities, as they influence how perpetrators, victims, and institutions are represented and morally evaluated.

The framework also incorporates the concept of nominalization, a linguistic strategy that transforms actions and processes into abstract nouns, often obscuring agency and mitigating responsibility (Fairclough, 1995). Nominal references to suspects, such as titles or institutional affiliations, function as discursive resources that either legitimize or delegitimize individuals based on their social status. These strategies intersect with power asymmetries, allowing journalists to navigate legal risks, personal safety concerns, and political pressures while still fulfilling their reporting roles.

Additionally, the study is informed by media framing theory, which explains how journalists select, emphasize, and structure information to guide audience interpretation (Entman, 1993). Linguistic framing in headlines and leads plays a crucial role in shaping public perceptions of justice, guilt, and innocence. By integrating Critical Linguistics with framing theory, this framework enables a nuanced analysis of how linguistic choices in crime reporting both reflect and reproduce social inequalities and power relations within the Kenyan sociopolitical context.

Lınguıstıc And Stylıstıc Features of Proverbs About “Mınd”

This study is grounded in an interdisciplinary theoretical framework that integrates paremiology, cognitive linguistics, semantic theory, and pragmatics to examine proverbs related to the concept of mind. Paremiology views proverbs as fixed folkloric expressions that encode collective wisdom, moral values, and cultural experience in a concise linguistic form (Mieder, 2004). Within this framework, proverbs are not merely ornamental language units but function as cultural texts that reflect shared social cognition and worldview.

From a cognitive linguistic perspective, the concept of “mind” in proverbs is understood as a culturally constructed abstraction that is often conceptualized through metaphor and embodied experience. Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory provides a key lens for explaining how abstract mental processes—such as thinking, reasoning, and judgment—are mapped onto concrete domains, allowing speakers to understand cognition through culturally familiar imagery. Proverbs thus act as cognitive models that shape and transmit collective understandings of intelligence, wisdom, and rational behavior.

In addition, semantic and lexical theories are employed to analyze how meaning is constructed through word choice, metaphor, and evaluative language in mind-related proverbs. Semantic analysis helps reveal how mental attributes are positively or negatively evaluated, while lexical analysis identifies key vocabulary associated with intellect, wisdom, or folly (Cruse, 2011). These linguistic choices reflect social norms regarding acceptable and unacceptable cognitive behavior.

List Jurnal Terindeks SCOPUS Bidang Linguistics, ELT & Culture

Quo Vadis?

IMPORTANT NOTES:

List 7 Jurnal Indonesia Terindeks Scopus: Nggak Recommended Bagi Yang Sudah Mau Habis Masa Studinya Karena Masa Dari Submit Sampai Publish Bisa 7 Bulan- 14 Bulan (Initial Review Aja 2,3 sampai 5 Bulan, Belum Proses Peer Review-Nya Sampai Terbit. Bagi Yang Masih Di Semester Awal Dan Pertengahan Di S3 Silakan Submit Untuk Mendapatkan Pengalaman Submission & Review.

The Values of Discipline in Macbeth

A. The Relationship between the Values of Discipline in Macbeth

a. Self-Control

Relevant scene:

  • Act 1, Scene 7 – Macbeth’s soliloquy before murdering King Duncan.

Macbeth is fully aware that killing Duncan is morally wrong and politically dangerous; however, he fails to restrain his ambition.

“I have no spur
To prick the sides of my intent, but only
Vaulting ambition…”
(Shakespeare, 1606/2015)

Interpretation:
This moment demonstrates that Macbeth possesses moral awareness but lacks self-control when ambition overwhelms rational judgment. His inner conflict reflects a failure of discipline, where desire overrides ethical reasoning. According to Bloom (2010), Shakespeare portrays ambition not as inherently evil, but as destructive when it is unchecked by moral self-regulation.

b. Moral Discipline

Relevant scene:

  • Banquo in Act 1, Scene 3 – Responding to the witches’ prophecies.

Unlike Macbeth, Banquo responds cautiously and critically to the supernatural predictions.

“The instruments of darkness tell us truths,
Win us with honest trifles, to betray’s
In deepest consequence.”
(Shakespeare, 1606/2015)

Interpretation:
Banquo exemplifies moral discipline through critical thinking and restraint. He recognizes the deceptive nature of temptation and refuses to act unethically to gain power. This aligns with ethical discipline as defined by Ryan and Deci (2000), where self-regulation is guided by internal moral values rather than external rewards.

c. Responsibility and Accountability

Relevant scene:

  • Macduff in Act 4 and Act 5 – After learning that his family has been murdered.

“Sinful Macduff,
They were all struck for thee!”
(Act 4, Scene 3)

Interpretation:
Macduff openly acknowledges his moral responsibility for his family’s death and does not shift blame onto others. His response reflects accountability and a commitment to corrective action. As Greenblatt (2005) notes, Macduff functions as a moral counterweight to Macbeth, demonstrating that ethical responsibility is central to just leadership.

d. Obedience to Ethical Principles

The Correlative Study of Teachers’ Teaching Methods on Students’ Emotional Engagement in Learning English

The Correlative Study of Teachers’ Teaching Methods on Students’ Emotional Engagement in Learning English

Teaching methods play a crucial role in shaping students’ learning experiences, particularly in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Beyond cognitive achievement, contemporary language education emphasizes the importance of students’ emotional engagement, which includes interest, enjoyment, enthusiasm, and a sense of belonging during the learning process. Emotional engagement is widely recognized as a key predictor of sustained motivation and active participation in language learning (Fredricks, Blumenfeld, & Paris, 2004). Therefore, examining the correlation between teachers’ teaching methods and students’ emotional engagement provides valuable insights into how pedagogical practices influence learners’ affective responses in English classrooms.

Teachers’ teaching methods encompass a wide range of instructional strategies, such as communicative language teaching, task-based learning, cooperative learning, and technology-enhanced instruction. These methods differ in the degree to which they promote interaction, autonomy, and meaningful language use. Research suggests that learner-centered and interactive teaching methods tend to foster positive emotional states by creating supportive and engaging learning environments (Dörnyei & Ryan, 2015). When students perceive teaching methods as relevant, enjoyable, and responsive to their needs, they are more likely to develop positive emotions toward learning English.

Emotional engagement, as a dimension of student engagement, refers to learners’ affective reactions to teachers, peers, learning activities, and the subject matter itself. In EFL contexts, emotional engagement is particularly important because language learning often involves anxiety, fear of making mistakes, and low self-confidence (Pekrun, 2006). Teaching methods that encourage collaboration, provide constructive feedback, and reduce excessive teacher dominance can help alleviate negative emotions and promote enjoyment and interest. Consequently, students who experience positive emotional engagement are more inclined to participate actively and persist in learning English.

Perbedaan Utama

AspekValiditasReliabilitas
Fokus UtamaKetepatan (measures what it should)Konsistensi (stable over repeats)
PengujianKorelasi, faktor analisisKoefisien alpha, split-half

Konferensi, seminar, dan media sosial adalah sarana efektif untuk promosi call for papers maupun call for editors and reviewers. Semakin luas jaringan, semakin besar peluang jurnal berkembang.

Aamiin.

Alur Cerita (Plot) Macbeth

Alur Cerita (Plot) Macbeth

  • Macbeth akan menjadi Thane of Cawdor

3. Kejatuhan Moral dan Kekerasan Berantai

Karena takut kehilangan kekuasaan, Macbeth berubah menjadi tiran:

  • Ia menyuruh membunuh Banquo, namun putra Banquo, Fleance, berhasil lolos

Pusat Nasional ISSN Indonesia <issn@brin.go.id
terima kasih.

All policies below are publicly available and are implemented consistently to safeguard the integrity of the scholarly record.

1. Authorship and Contributorship Policy

The Journal defines authorship based on substantial intellectual contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the research. All listed authors must have participated in drafting or critically revising the manuscript, approved the final version for publication, and agreed to be accountable for all aspects of the work. Individuals whose contributions do not meet authorship criteria must be properly acknowledged as contributors.

To prevent unethical practices such as ghost, gift, or guest authorship, the Journal requires a clear statement of author contributions and written confirmation from all authors at the time of submission. Any authorship disputes arising before or after publication will be handled transparently and in line with recognized ethical guidelines. The reference: COPE'S guidance Journal's policies on authorship and contributorship.

2. Complaints and Appeals Policy

The Journal provides a clear mechanism for submitting complaints or appeals concerning editorial decisions, peer-review processes, or publication ethics. Complaints may be submitted by authors, reviewers, or readers and will be acknowledged promptly and handled in a timely, objective, and confidential manner. Appeals against editorial decisions are evaluated by senior editors or an independent editorial panel when necessary. All decisions are based on academic merit and ethical considerations, ensuring fairness, accountability, and editorial independence. The reference: COPE'S guidance on How the journal will handle complaints and appeals.

3. Research Misconduct Policy

The Journal takes allegations of research misconduct seriously, including plagiarism, data fabrication or falsification, redundant publication, and citation manipulation. Manuscripts are routinely screened using appropriate detection tools, and concerns may be raised during review or after publication. Suspected misconduct is investigated following established ethical procedures and, where appropriate, COPE guidelines. The Journal may contact authors, institutions, or funders during investigations and will take corrective actions—including corrections or retractions—when misconduct is confirmed. The reference: COPE'S guidance on How the journal will handle allegations of research misconduct.

4. Conflicts of Interest Policy

All authors, editors, and reviewers are required to disclose any financial or non-financial conflicts of interest that could influence the research, review, or editorial decision-making process. These disclosures promote transparency and allow readers to assess potential sources of bias. Declared conflicts of interest are published alongside articles when relevant. Failure to disclose conflicts may result in editorial action, including correction or retraction, to protect the credibility of the scholarly record. The reference:  COPE'S guidance on Journal's policies on conflicts of interest.

5. Data Sharing and Reproducibility Policy

The Journal encourages transparency and reproducibility by requiring authors to make research data, methods, and materials available whenever possible. Authors must include a data availability statement explaining how supporting data can be accessed or why access is restricted. Compliance with this policy is assessed during editorial review. By promoting responsible data sharing, the Journal supports open science practices and enables independent verification of research findings.  The reference: COPE'S guidance on Journal's policies of data sharing and reproducibility.

6. Ethical Oversight Policy

Research published in the Journal must comply with internationally recognized ethical standards, particularly for studies involving human participants, animals, or sensitive data. Authors are required to provide evidence of ethical approval and informed consent where applicable. Any ethical concerns raised after publication are investigated thoroughly. The Journal reserves the right to take corrective actions to ensure accountability and ethical compliance. The reference:  COPE'S guidance on Journal's policy of ethical oversight.

7. Intellectual Property Policy

The Journal clearly defines copyright and licensing arrangements for published content. Authors retain copyright while granting the Journal the right to publish the work under an open-access license, typically a Creative Commons license, which permits lawful reuse under stated conditions. Cases of intellectual property infringement are handled transparently and may result in corrections or retractions. This policy ensures legal clarity for authors, readers, and third-party users. The reference:  COPE'S guidance on the Journal's policy of intellectual property.

8. Post-Publication Discussion Policy

The Journal supports scholarly dialogue after publication through letters to the editor, commentaries, or other approved formats. Post-publication discussions allow readers to raise questions, provide critiques, or offer additional perspectives. All submissions for post-publication discussion are moderated to ensure respectful, evidence-based discourse. Authors are allowed to respond, fostering constructive academic exchange. Reference: COPE'S guidance on Journal's options for post-publication discussions.

9. Corrections and Retractions Policy

The Journal is committed to maintaining the accuracy of the scholarly record. Minor errors that do not affect the validity of the work are corrected through formal notices, such as errata or corrigenda. Articles may be retracted in cases of serious error or ethical violation. All corrections and retractions are clearly labeled, linked to the original article, and explained transparently to readers. Reference: COPE'S guidance on Journal's policies on corrections and retractions.
