Relevansi bahasa dan pikiran (sebuah analisis yang psikolinguistik banget:)

       Bahasa dan Pikiran Saling Terkait?
                 Mungkin itu salah satu pertanyaan yang pernah mampir dalam benak kita. Namun, beberapa pakar psikolinguistik telah memikirkan hal ini sejak lama dan telah menelitinya.

Salah satu pakar Psikolinguistik yang mendalami kaitan antara bahasa dan pikiran adalah Soenjono. Dalam buku Psikolinguistik Pengantar Pemahaman Bahasa Manusia, Soenjono berpendapat bahwa orang sudah lama sekali berbicara tentang otak dan bahasa. Aristotle pada tahun 384-322 Sebelum Masehi telah berbicara soal hati yang melakukan hal-hal yang kini diketahui dilakukan juga oleh otak. Dari pendapat Soenjono tersebut dapat dilihat jelas bahwa ada keterkaitan antara otak dan bahasa. Otak merupakan organ yang berfungsi untuk berpikir. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan pula bahwa ada keterkaitan antara pikiran dan bahasa.

Pendapat para ahli mengenai keterkaitan bahasa & pikiran dibagi menjadi 3 kelompok, yaitu :

1.   Ahli yang berpendapat bahwa bahasa mempengaruhi pikiran

Ahli yang mendukung hubungan ini adalah Benyamin Whorf dan gurunya, Edward Saphir. Menurut mereka pemahaman terhadap kata mempengaruhi pandangannya terhadap realitas. Pikiran kita dapat terkondisikan oleh kata yang kita digunakan. Whorf dalam Rahmat (2000) mengatakan bahwa keterkaitan antara bahasa dengan pikiran terletak pada asumsi bahwa bahasa mempengaruhi cara pandang manusia terhadap dunia, serta mempengaruhi pemikiran individu pemakai bahasa itu. Sebagai contoh Bangsa Jepang. Orang Jepang mempunyai pikiran yang sangat tinggi karena orang Jepang mempunyai banyak kosa kata dalam mejelaskan sebuah realitas. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa mereka mempunyai pemahaman yang mendetail tentang realitas.

Dalam hukum amerika, berpoligami adalah kejahatan. Tetapi bagi 1200 warga centennial park -kampung kecil di colorado arizona- berpoligami menjadi impian. Bahkan para gadis justru ingin berbagi suami saat menikah kelak. Mungkin ada yang bersikap moderat ditengah kontroversi soal poligami, bahwa orang berpoligami merupakan pilihan dan kesepakatan. Bahkan di as yang menegaskan bahwa poligami adalah kejahatan, praktik rumah tangga dgn dua atau beberapa cinta ternyata tetap ada. Sekitar 1200 penduduk centennial park, kampung kecil didekat colorado, menunjukkan bahwa mereka berpoligami juga dengan alasan sendiri. Berbeda dgn mayoritas warga as, mereka menyebut komunitasnya all-american families (keluarga amerika seluruhnya), dlm arti sebenarnya. Seperti ariel hammon, 32, yang menikahi helen, 30, yg memberinya tujuh orang anak, kemudian menikahi lisa, 20, yg memberinya dua anak.

Functions of Speech
1- Referential function: to convey information and this is done through different forms of speech, such as declarative or interrogative statements.
- Declarative statements (After this semester, I'm going to visit London)
- Interrogative statements using Wh-questions (what is your name?)
- Interrogative statements using yes/no questions (do like London?)
- Alternative questions with answer choices (do like tea or coffee?)
2- Directive function: giving orders or making requests by using imperative statements. An imperative statements may express a strict demand such as saying (open the door) or it can seem less demanding by using the politeness strategy such as saying (open the door, please) or through using question tags in the case of informality between mother and son (Max the TV is still on!)
3- Expressive function: to express personal feelings, thoughts, ideas and opinions, with different choice words, intonation, etc. These expressions are submissive to social factors and to the nature of the expression as negative (I'm very gloomy tonight) or positive (I'm feeling very good today).

Abstrak

Berdasarkan observasi pendahuluan, penulis menemukan beberapa masalah terkait dengan aktivitas pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di Madrasah Aliyah Sunan Drajat Sugio-Lamongan. Masalah-masalah tersebut adalah rendahnya kemampuan berbicara siswa, rendahnya motivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, dan penggunaan teknik yang monoton dan tidak tepat oleh guru. Oleh karena itu, peneliti termotivasi untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut dengan cara menerapkan teknik bermain peran dalam pengajaran ketrampilan berbicara.

AbstrakThe title of this study is ‘The Effectiveness of Extensive Reading Activity in Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension’. This study was aimed to find out the effectiveness of extensive reading in improving students’ reading comprehension. This study which was conducted at a private SMA in Bandung employed quasi experimental method. Pre-test, treatment, and post-test served as the research design in this study. In this case the eleventh grade students in class XI B and XI C became the sample of this study. Reading comprehension test and questionnaire were used as the research instruments. The data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0 and interpreted in descriptive way.

The Effectiveness of Extensive Reading Activity in Increasing Reading Comprehension and Reading Speed of English Text in the Ninth Grade Students of MTs Negeri Pamekasan 1.


Key words: extensive reading activity, reading comprehension, reading speed.

This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of extensive reading activity in increasing reading comprehension and reading speed. The major questions to be answered were:
(1) "Do the ninth grade students of MTs Negeri Pamekasan 1 who are given additional extensive reading activity achieve higher reading comprehension compared to the students who are not given additional extensive reading activity?"
(2) "Do the ninth grade students of MTs Negeri Pamekasan 1 who are given additional extensive reading activity achieve higher reading speed compared to the students who are not given additional extensive reading activity?"

Today is the anniversary of the opening of the Chunnel, the tunnel that runs under the English Channel connecting France and England. In 1994, the 31 mile Chunnel was formally opened in a ribbon cutting ceremony by France's President Mitterrand and the Queen of England.

It took eight years to complete the Chunnel, but its name is consistent with a linguistic phenomenon that raged throughout the 20th century, and it doesn't look like there is a light at the end of the tunnel this century. The phenomenon is blending words, as in taking two words: channel and tunnel, and blending them into a single word: Chunnel.

The title of this paper is a conversational implicature analysis on Oscar  Wilde’s Happy Prince. In this paper, the writer discusses conversational implicature in one of Oscar Wilde’s short story entitled Happy Prince. The objectives of the study are to identify the implicature utterances uttered by the characters in Oscar Wilde’s Happy Prince and  to describe the implied meaning uttered by the characters in Oscar Wilde’s Happy Prince.
