Spooner recalls a tragic accident on his way back to the station. A truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a car carrying Harold Lloyd and his 12-year-old daughter, Sarah. The impact pushed both vehicles into a river. As the cars sank, Spooner and Sarah were trapped inside and struggling to survive. A robot named Ford arrived to rescue them, but instead of saving Sarah, it chose Spooner after calculating their chances of survival.

The robot determined that Spooner had a 45% chance of survival, while Sarah had only an 11% chance. Although Spooner survived, Sarah drowned. For Spooner, the decision was deeply disturbing because he believed 11% was still enough to justify saving a child.
