To market, to market

From being the privileged language of the white-collared elite, English, as the preferred mode of communication, has now trickled down to the lowest common denominator — it is these days a vital factor in deciding your employability quotient
When Lord Macaulay, through his famous 'Minute on Education', imposed English on Indians way back in 1835, he had little clue how deeply entrenched its roots would become in a country that prided itself on Sanskrit, the language of the gods. The Queen's language has come a long way in India.
Today, in this nation of a billion plus people — with a literate population of 66 per cent as of 2007 — knowledge of English guarantees a job across sectors. Be it a chauffeur, a hairdresser, a bell boy or a waiter, salutations and courtesies in English are considered so essential that often a minimum skill in the language is non-negotiable with recruiters.
A majority of F&B (food and beverage) outlets, a sector that employ large numbers of young people, insist that employees speak to customers in fluent and correct English. Manpreet Gulri, development agent for Subway, a popular fast food chain, says, "If an employee speaks good English he/she can communicate far better with our customers. We are an international brand, and our customers come from cross-sections of society. Communicating in English becomes necessary."
Karishma Dhawan, human resource manager, Oxford Bookstore, agrees with Gulri. She says that it is important for the staff to be well-versed in English because that's the language of the books they stock. "The staff should understand the buyer's needs and should be familiar with the content of the books," she says. "We get a huge number of applications and many of them are rejected because candidates are unable to speak in English. Certain job profiles like that of sales executives, store managers and public relations executives require candidates to talk confidently to customers in English. It is a musthave skill."

Grand tour around arizona

NOOR QOMARIYAH

It is really an awesome experience when I was in Arizona State University, USA. It’s started from 18 March till 14 May when I was gathering, living and studying with students from all over Indonesia and the world which then left many impressive memories in my deepest heart. It is still clear how beautiful Grand Canyon is, how fresh the air is, how heat the weather is, how beautiful the yellow blossom is, how the clean everywhere is, how the beautiful my last night looking at the moon is, how respectful everybody is, how obedient they are and many others how... .

Looking around in the musical instrument museum gives me another experience. There, I could find many musical instruments almost from each country in the globe. From the story, that museum was established personally by musical instruments fan. He collected all of them in order to realize his interest and keep the cultural heritage. Now, it opens to public even though it’s just annual exhibition. At that time, I was so lucky since I can get a chance to see and try some bizarre instruments. We, Indonesian students, even tried to play gamelan, which is provided completely, with ridiculous rhythm which we own selves didn’t know what song it was. Luckily, the others visitors and the staff of the museum were so excited hearing our game. It’s funny story, moreover it’s embarrassing story if the real gamelan players listen our song. Anyways, we’re really proud of showing to the visitors as the junior Indonesia ambassador.

WHY MANY BRITONS CONVERTING TO ISLAM

WHY MANY BRITONS CONVERTING TO ISLAM

BY  NUR MALIKHAH,S.Pd,M.Hum

Generally speaking, being a Muslim in non-muslim countries (i.e. European countries) is sometimes hard. Many aspects make Muslims get difficulties to have their lives, like the way they do the five times prayer, how to get halal food, how to dress-up, how to socialize with community, and so on. One real example is the situation in France where the government has set to forbid women to wear burqa in France. Women wearing headscarf will be harassed and get unusual treatment by others. The other thing is that it is also hard to get halal food when Muslims live among non-muslims as most food contains alcohol, pork, or even any meat which is not slaughtered without mentioning the name of Allah. European people tend to have their common socialization in bar, pub with only alcoholic drinks served, and Muslims will not be able to mingle with them in the same manner with them even they do not drink anything.

THE ROLE OF TEACHER IN GLOBALIZATION ERA

Siti Faiqotun Muthoharoh
NIM : (11309068)
The term”Guru” comes from the Indian language which means the one who teaches about the deliverance from misery. Rabinranath Tagore (1986-1941), using the term “Shanti Niketan” or “peace” to the noble task of practicing teachers in developing children's spirituality of India (spiritual intelligence). In Arabic, the teacher known as al-Mua'allim or al-Ustadz which will provide knowledge in MajelisTa’lim (places to acquire knowledge).
Understanding teachers then get wider, not only limited in context of science that is spiritual intelligence and intellectual intelligence, but also about   jasmaniyah or kinesthetic intelligence (bodily kinesthetic), such as dance teacher, sport teacher, and music teacher.
In general terms, people do not have difficulty in explaining who the teacher and the figure of the teacher. People simply know that the teacher is a profession associated with the education of children in schools, in educational institutions, and those who must master the instructional materials contained in the curriculum. Whether in employment or as a profession, teachers are always referred to as one of the main components of education is very important. Thus, teachers are not only known formally as an educator, teacher, coach, mentor, but also as a social agent is hired by society to help facilitate members of society who attend school. In this paper, I will discuss about the role of teacher in the future along with technological development.
The roles of teacher are specific behaviours that are characteristic of a teacher. Professional role of teachers will result in outputs that have a professional role as well. This shows how teachers have a very important role in learning. The argument about the role of teacher came from Tony Buzan, an expert of mind-mapping. Here is his note about the role of a teacher in the future:
1.      Teacher is primarily responsible for the future.
The role of a teacher here is how to use 'power' is to be significant, because this is a curse and at the same time a blessing to be a teacher.
2.      Teacher is the rescuer of human creativity.
It is based on research done by Tony Buzan. This research calculates human creativity at a certain age level. The result was quite interesting. Creativity score was 95  plus on a level of  kindergarten   75 on an elementary school student level, junior and senior high student level 50, and college student level 25 and adults 10 (there is even a minus!).This is because of the failure of education, this failure occured  since according to him “proper and good education will not fail to develop human creativity. Tony said that if education and learning process is done properly, then it should be the human brain that will become-the more creative-the better-development with the human age. It can be shown by the 'genius' in history.  Leonardo da Vinci or Thomas Edison had found more and more 'findings' at the age of 'twilight'. One recent example is in Italy, Rita Levi Montalcini, Nobel laureates in medicine scientist who has been a in a century old (exactly   on April 20, 2009).
3.      Teacher has the privilege of helping the students mine the gold mind.
The human developed from one era to another era. Start from 10 thousands years ago was Agrarian era, 200 years ago was an industrial era, 50 years ago was an information era, seventeen years ago was knowledge and sciences era, and now is mind-mapping era. In this era, we will search the way how to manage the information. We will use the “manager” of knowledge (brain). It will be very effective, if we can manage our brain to do the mind-mapping to increase our ability.
4.      Teacher is the person who helps the students nurtures the gardens of multiple intelligences.
Human beings are in the multiple intelligence era now. In this era, a teacher must understand the way how to integrate the teaching and learning process in a good manner, so that the students have a chance to develop all of their intelligence.

5.      Teacher is shepherd of daydreams who works with students to help make it come true.
Belongs to Tony Buzan, daydreams are a skill in human brain. Especially, the skill of right  brain. So, the teacher must guide his/her students to use the daydreams in learning process to develop the work of the right brain.

6.      Teacher is the person who launches the child on the exploration of its own infinite universe.
A task of a teacher here, knows the way how to make the left brain and the right brain have a balance work. It will be very useful to find the unlimited creativity from the students.
From the roles of teacher that was mentioned above, we know that there are many roles of teacher. In the future, the role of teacher may  be will change. However, the role of a teacher is still needed because the public demands of its citizens to master science and technology in all areas of life. It is important for us, as a candidate of teacher to know it.
Finally, I can conclude that  the main roles of a teacher are, establishing order and facilitating learning. The matters which are included in the order are the discipline of students in the class, the interaction between students and teachers, managing the material, the learning environment, etc. the facilities for teaching and learning process like classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and microteaching’s rooms.
Along with the globalization era, the roles of teacher have changed. I have opinions about the changes, they are:
·         As a knowledge deliveryman, the main source of information, the sources of answers become a learning facilitator, a trainer, a collaborator, and a friend for students in the learning activity.
·         As a manager of teaching and learning process become an alternative for students in learning process.  Furthermore, the development of teachers’ education must give an attention to globalization with all of the consequences. A candidate of teacher must be a professional man. He/she must have academic competency, personal competency, and social competency.
·         A teacher in the future must have good attitudes, skills, and knowledge to grow the motivation of students and to develop the professionalism.

    FANBOYS: FOR,AND,NOR,BUT, OR,YET,SO

There are only seven coordinating conjunctions in the English language, and they are easily remembered by the acronym FANBOYS:
    FANBOYS are the cordinating conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions signify the relationship between two independent clauses (IC), allowing the writer to specify meaning. In other words, when we construct a compound sentence using a coordinating conjunction, we ask our readers to understand that the two ideas logically relate to each other in the way in which we specify:
     Logic
     Coordinating Conjunctions
     Addition
     and
     Opposition, Contrast, Concession
     Cause
     for
     Result or Effect
     so
     Choice, Option, Alternative

In addition to signifying a specific relationship between ideas, the compound structure also tells the reader that the ideas in these clauses are valued equally: one idea is no more important than the other. I may choose to indicate contrast between ideas by using the coordinating conjunction "but," wanting my reader to see the difference(s) between my ideas, yet I am also indicating to my reader that each independent clause should be equally valued.

    C A M P U S C O M E D Y : I am not your walking dictionary

When I was still studying in English department in 1993, I had one favorite lecturer. Her name was Mrs.Diah Kristina. One day when we are joining her SPEAKING class she ordered us one by one to tell his or her most interesting experience in our life. One of my friend with a little fluency and knowledge of English vocabulary stood anxiously and unconfidently in front of the class. He had just been starting his story but whenever he forgot or hesitated about the correct diction and spelling of an English word or expression he kept on asking to my lecturer. At the first and the second request of him, my lecturer wisely gave him the answer. But at the third time when he asked to my lecturer simply she said, “MY DEAR STUDENT, I AM NOT YOUR WALKING DICTIONARY”.

I betray you but i forgive you?

When I was still learning in English department several years ago , I had one memorable experience in the class. At that moment I had one smart creative lecturer. His name was Mr. Agus. One day when we are attending his GRAMMAR class he ordered us one by one to make a simple sentence using one transitive verb. The funny time came when there was the two intimate students who got their turn of making a sentence. Their name was Rahmat and Ipung. They both are the funniest students in my class. Rahmat loudly said, “I BETRAY YOU! ”. He uttered it by pretending to give a wicked angry sight at Ipung. Then Ipung in turn loudly said, “I FORGIVE YOU!”. He stated it by smiling at Rahmat. Knowing this all the students laugh uproariously.
